Brian Wickstrom: Leadership, Service, and Impact in Athletics and Higher Education — An Updated
Leadership evolves through experience, service, and accountability — and my career has been shaped by each of these.
From a student-athlete with big goals to a professional leading teams in athletics and higher education, I have always believed that strong values and clear expectations create environments where people thrive.
This updated overview reflects my continued growth as a leader, husband, father, and mentor — and the work I remain committed to today.
A Foundation Built on Athletics, Education, and Service
My career began as a track-and-field athlete, where I learned lessons that still guide me: discipline, teamwork, and the belief that consistency creates progress.
Those same values carried into leadership roles at multiple universities, where I worked to strengthen student–athlete experiences, academic support systems, fundraising opportunities, and community partnerships.
Across every role, my goal has been simple: make things better than I found them.
Commitment to Transparency and Organizational Growth
Over the years, I have led departments and teams through:
Strategic planning
Budget growth and restructuring
Hiring and staff development
Donor and alumni engagement
Program evaluation and improvement
I believe that strong organizations are built on clear communication and accountability, and I strive to create cultures where expectations and values are shared at every level.
Supporting People and Building Positive Culture
The work I am most proud of has always centered on people — students, staff, families, and communities.
Leadership is not only about goals or outcomes; it is about the individuals you support along the way.
Some of my most meaningful accomplishments include:
Mentoring young professionals
Helping student–athletes transition into college life
Building community-based service partnerships
Leading teams through challenging transitions
Supporting families through athletics and education programs
These experiences strengthened my belief that leadership is service, and service requires empathy, humility, and a willingness to grow.
Family, Faith, and Purpose
At the center of my life is my family.
My wife, Celina, and our children have grounded me during every chapter of my career. Their support has kept me focused, positive, and driven to make an impact that extends beyond the workplace.
Faith, personal reflection, and gratitude continue to shape how I show up each day — as a leader and as a person.
Looking Ahead
My professional journey is still being written, and I remain committed to:
Lifelong learning
Strengthening organizations
Supporting student–athletes and young leaders
Contributing to higher education and community development
Each experience has prepared me for the opportunities ahead, and I look forward to continuing work that aligns with my values of integrity, service, and leadership.
