Dr. Brian David Wickstrom: Building Innovation at St. John Bosco — From eSports to Global Enrollment Expansion

Dr. Brian David Wickstrom’s leadership at St. John Bosco High School was defined by a forward-looking approach to growth, innovation, and student opportunity. At a time when many secondary institutions were still operating within traditional academic and extracurricular models, Wickstrom led initiatives that positioned the school at the forefront of emerging trends in education, technology, and global access.

One of the most notable examples was the development and rapid expansion of St. John Bosco’s eSports program. When Wickstrom arrived, competitive gaming and structured eSports opportunities were minimal. Recognizing both the cultural relevance and the educational potential of eSports, he supported the strategic investment and development of a program that would grow into a nationally recognized model. Under his leadership, St. John Bosco’s eSports teams achieved national championships, competing successfully not only against peer high schools but also against collegiate programs. This initiative demonstrated how forward-thinking leadership can create new pathways for student engagement, skill development, and institutional visibility.

In addition to expanding extracurricular innovation, Wickstrom led efforts to extend the reach of St. John Bosco beyond its traditional geographic footprint. Through the launch of SJB Global, an online academic platform, the school was able to serve students from across the United States. This initiative reflected a broader understanding of how digital learning environments could complement in-person education while expanding access to a mission-driven institution. SJB Global provided new opportunities for students who otherwise would not have had access to the St. John Bosco experience, while also positioning the school as an early adopter of scalable, hybrid education models.

Wickstrom also recognized the importance of international student engagement and the role it plays in both cultural enrichment and institutional growth. To support this, he oversaw the conversion of an underutilized residence into a functional residential hall for international students. This transformation allowed St. John Bosco to welcome students from around the world, enhancing the diversity of the student body and creating a more globally connected campus environment. The residential program not only supported enrollment growth but also aligned with the school’s broader mission of developing well-rounded, globally aware graduates.

These initiatives—eSports expansion, the launch of SJB Global, and the development of international residential capacity—reflect a leadership philosophy grounded in innovation, adaptability, and long-term institutional strategy. Rather than relying solely on traditional enrollment models, Wickstrom pursued opportunities that expanded access, increased engagement, and strengthened the school’s competitive position in a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

As schools and universities continue to navigate changes in technology, student expectations, and global connectivity, the work accomplished at St. John Bosco offers a compelling example of how leadership can drive meaningful, forward-thinking growth.
