Leadership Is About Building Organizations That Help People Thrive | Dr. Brian Wickstrom
By Dr. Brian Wickstrom
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of serving colleges, universities, independent schools, nonprofit organizations, and private companies in executive leadership roles. Those experiences have reinforced a belief that continues to shape my approach to leadership: exceptional organizations are built by exceptional people working together toward a shared purpose.
Whether serving as a university athletics director, school president, chief administrative officer, interim chief financial officer, or executive advisor, I have learned that leadership is not about individual recognition. It is about helping organizations become stronger, healthier, and better prepared for the future.
Over the past twenty-five years, I have partnered with governing boards, presidents, executive leadership teams, faculty, coaches, donors, community leaders, and dedicated staff members to navigate organizational growth, financial stewardship, strategic planning, fundraising, enrollment management, and operational transformation. Every institution has presented different opportunities and different challenges, but the principles of effective leadership remain remarkably consistent.
Successful organizations establish a clear vision, communicate openly, make thoughtful decisions grounded in data and values, and create cultures where people feel respected, empowered, and accountable.
I have been fortunate to help organizations secure more than $100 million in philanthropic commitments, strengthen financial performance, expand enrollment, launch new strategic initiatives, and improve long-term organizational sustainability. While measurable results are important, I believe they are ultimately the product of strong relationships, collaboration, and a commitment to serving others.
One lesson has become increasingly clear throughout my career.
The most effective leaders spend less time asking, "How can I be successful?" and more time asking, "How can I help this organization succeed?"
That philosophy continues to guide my work today.
I remain passionate about executive leadership, organizational transformation, financial stewardship, philanthropy, and helping mission-driven organizations navigate periods of growth and change. Higher education, independent schools, and nonprofit organizations have an extraordinary ability to transform lives, and I consider it a privilege to contribute to institutions committed to developing future generations of leaders.
